Episode 7 of Bitcoin Takes by Vexl 🎙️

If Bitcoin really wins, at some point the question stops being:

“How much fiat is my Bitcoin worth?”

And as @OKIN just said:

“How do I get Bitcoin when nobody wants my fiat?”

In the West, financial sovereignty is a Twitter debate.
In Burundi, people are shipping code for it.

The story behind FREETI and BitDevs Gitega - and why Vexl supports them. 🧵

In Burundi, access to money is closely tied to the state. For many, formal banking has never been a realistic option.

So "who actually controls my money?" isn't a thought experiment there. It's answered every single day.

That’s why Bitcoin lands different here.

Not as an investment.
A way to hold your own money, move it without permission, and transact without a bank in the middle.

But a tool only matters if people know how to use it.

That's https://freeti.org/ - Free Tech Institute, a non-profit in Burundi. They've spent years teaching Bitcoin, privacy and freedom tech there.

Not just how to use the tools. How to build them.

This June, together with BitDevs Gitega and @Africa Free Routing, they ran two Bitcoin P2P hackathons in Bujumbura.

→ 30 developers
→ 10 teams
→ 10 working prototypes

10 teams entered.
10 teams shipped.

This wasn’t a beginner workshop.

Teams were spinning up Lightning nodes, connecting APIs, and building fully self-custodial setups.

Real infrastructure. Built in two days.

And the two winning teams?

NtareBTC Pay - near-instant Lightning payments across Africa, without the usual remittance fees.

FashaBTC - a Bitcoin mutual aid network. Launch a campaign in two minutes and receive support directly, from anywhere.

Ncuti’s team also built Muhira Bitcoin for Burundi’s savings associations.

They set out to fix four basic problems:

→ 10–15% lost to international transfer fees
→ 3–7 days for payments to arrive
→ Paper records with no traceability
→ Diaspora members locked out entirely

Their own line, from their slide:

"Even from far away, a member should never lose their place in their association."

That's what Bitcoin is here for.

It's easy to argue about financial sovereignty in the abstract when your bank works.

When moving your own money can mean a 15% fee and a week of waiting, the conversation gets very practical very quickly.

Every prototype shipped open source. Public repos, documented and ready for whoever builds next.

Vexl’s part? Funding and mentorship.

FREETI, BitDevs Gitega and Africa Free Routing built the rest.

Bitcoin doesn’t need another use case.

Sometimes the use case is simply having an alternative.
In Burundi, they’re not debating financial sovereignty.

They’re building it.

Follow the people doing the work:

Buying Bitcoin is not opting out when every purchase is linked to your identity, bank account, and home address.

You can't even buy a loaf of bread here without someone tracking it, so this whole opt out fantasy feels like a luxury I can't afford. 🤍 Holding onto hope amidst the ruins—our journey is shared on my pinned post if you feel like reading.

It appears the sign up page isn’t formatted properly for U.S. Phone Numbers. Also why no Nostr based sign up?

Are you new to Bitcoin?

You should avoid:
👮🏻‍♂️ KYC surveillance
💸 leaving Bitcoin on the exchanges
💩 crypto diversification

but study instead:
🔑 self-custody
🫂 circular economies
🕶️ P2P & noKYC mindset

Bitcoin is winning as an asset and losing as money. Somehow, Bitcoiners are celebrating both.
