Sad news again today. Like many others of my generation, I discovered Anthony Stewart Head through Buffy (even though 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' will always have a little piece of my weirdo heart too). He was a prolific actor and musician whose career in film, TV, and theatre spanned decades.

What made his portrayal of Giles stay with so many of us was the heart, vulnerability, sarcasm, and complexity he brought to the role. Someone endearingly socially awkward, yet fiercely protective, stepping in as the accepting, supportive father figure that the Scooby Gang could always rely on, and perhaps that many people wished they had around, as well. The show's found family dynamic resonated with tons of young viewers, for many reasons, and Giles was undeniably at the centre of it.

By all accounts, he seems to have been a genuinely kind and accepting guy in real life too: the story of him reaching out to a trans fan who was struggling and was sad because all his convention photos and autographs were signed to his deadname, inviting him over to his farm to spend the day, and printing new photos to sign for him, is proof of that (https://www.thepinknews.com/2019/12/20/anthony-stewart-head-trans-fan/). Just found out about the passing of Marjane Satrapi at only 56. An exceptionally talented woman, and 'Persepolis', arguably her most celebrated work, is proof of why. In those graphic novels she depicted her childhood and early adulthood in Iran and later in Europe, during the Islamic Revolution and its aftermath. A very personal story that stands among the most important works in modern literature, not just within the comic book medium. A masterpiece on the level of Art Spiegelman's 'Maus'.

It shattered stereotypes and introduced western readers to a version of Iran they had never seen, humanising its people without sugarcoating the politics or the systemic oppression, and particularly how it affected the everyday lives of women. An honest, feminist story told through the eyes of a young girl who loved punk rock, who dreamed, and who refused to conform.

If you've never read her work, do yourself a favour and pick up 'Persepolis', or watch the brilliant animated film adaptation, which she co-directed and which took home the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007.

RIP to an absolute legend. 🤘

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of 'Wynonna Earp', the most Buffy-like show to come after the destruction of the Hellmouth. The show loosely adapted the 1996 horror western comic book by Beau Smith, putting a new spin to it, but still starring the great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp, who inherits his mystical Colt revolver that has the power to banish demonic entities called Revenants back to hell.

This show has everything: 4 seasons of badass women, stylised action, complex characters, found family, wit, snark, LGBTQIA+ representation, demons and evil supernatural forces, a devoted fanbase, and a proper ending despite cancellation.

There are some people doing renovations on the balcony at the apartment across the street, and she's been on high security alert 'I got my eye on you' mode all morning to discourage them in case any of them gets any funny ideas and decides to fly over.

You may laugh, but not a single person has flown or Spider-manned their way in as long as she's been guarding this 4th floor place, so she's clearly excellent at her job!

Tonight’s watch was 'Resurrection: A Biohazard Story', a full-length Resident Evil fan film that brings back the original actors from the live-action intro of the first game (with a new actress stepping in for Jill), taking place decades after the Spencer Mansion incident. It reunites Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, and Rebecca Chambers, facing yet another outbreak, once again involving Albert Wesker.

The film is full of camp and intentional cheesiness worthy of the original, and full of love for the franchise. Tons of nods and references, including several cameos by other voice actors from the series. No joke, it was legitimately touching seeing the actors from the iconic RE1 intro return for the 30th anniversary in this way. It's obviously not part of canon for copyright reasons, but I'm glad this project was allowed to exist in all its B-movie-esque glory. Plus it's available to watch for free:
