New router setup turned into an all day project sigh, but it does feel pretty gangster to have a custom built open source router made out of spare parts

It is a big flex for sure. I would not recommend it as it is a really crucial part of the network. Fun until it is working and a pretty nightmare when it does stop.
General solutions are quicker to troubleshoot.
Also there is minimal gain beside flexing your skills.
