@nprofile1q... Yeah, exactly. Compare that with what a Big Mac costs today vs what you earn per hour... In fact, I'm sure that even with that calculation, a Big Mac will cost a greater percentage of your wage today, because the cost of living has increased faster than salaries have. :)

@nprofile1q... Yeah, but you also can't really compare it because our economies are different. You can't say, Oh, a pound is worth x ZAR, so £6k per year is R13k per year (never mind the fact than in the 80s, a pound was worth R2, and today's it's worth R22). The Bic Mac index is much better at describing how people actually LIVE.

My first job was in 1998, and I was earning R2k per month. My daughter is set to earn around R20k per month as a starting salary after she graduates, and she feels that's a bit low.

In High School account, we learnt that a business doing R1m turnover per annum was reasonably successful. Now a business ONLY doing R1m turnover per annum is a candidate for business rescue. :D

@nprofile1q... I used to get R10 per month pocket money in the 80s, and I could buy a Masters of the Universe action figure, or save a couple of months and buy the Masters of the Universe Slime Castle.

Now you can't park your car outside the supermarket for an hour for R10. :)

@nprofile1q... To put it in perspective, I think I earn more in a month (before tax) than my parents' first house cost. And they signed a 20-year bond to pay off that house....
