Just thinking the other day about how many artists I knew whose breakout hit was a cover song.
The earliest one I've found is Elvis covering Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog".

The first song I can remember from hearing by The Pet Shop Boys was Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind". The first RHCP song I remember hearing was Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" is a cover of Gloria Jones' 1964 recording.
But I have a sense that at some point, this became a very deliberate strategy on the part of record companies promoting artists: familiar song, new artist's sound, change one thing only to make the new sound accessible.

I’ve only met Brad Bradford once, outside woodbine station during his first campaign. I told him I was a single issue voter, and that issue was more bike lanes. I am old enough to remember when getting a computer over email was a silly joke. Everyone knew that you couldn’t send self-executing code through email, it made no sense at all. And then Microsoft integrated Visual Basic into Outlook, and then you could easily do that, and then people did.
It’s incredible how casually people will turn previously benign systems into a full-execution context without thinking through the most basic consequences of that decision.

The intermittent keyboard issue I’ve been having with my beloved MNT Reform has turned out to be a diagnosable cable/routing problem, a relief since that team isn’t still making more of the weird 1stgen keyboard that I’m so fond of. Saves me a pricy repair, and we live to fight another day.
