There have been a few attempts to solve this, notably nixpkgs and guix bootstrap their entire systems from source, with the only binary being under 1kib. self-hosting languages provide a problem though.
aiui guix tries a bit harder to solve that problem, e.g. their rust is bootstrapped from mrustc and many stages of rustc versions.

It feels like every operating system has issues these days. Linux is overrun with slop and impossible to contribute to, Microsoft is doing its utmost to make Windows unusable, and Apple is rushing out releases ignoring their QA teams. Even smaller OSes like FreeBSD are not immune.
