Today we received an order back from our courier. The first order that was shipped was claimed by the shipping company to be delivered in the letterbox.
The client was disappointed so we decided to do an extra shipment of the book in combination with autograph verification.
So we would know it would arrive. The shipper had three attempts but failed to deliver.
Now it was returned.
As this is an international shipment this cost us,
- 3 x shipping
- time of comms
- packing twice and packing materials plus unpacking return once (always damaged) The margin on a book is €3,80 euros. After income tax it’s ~half. In this specific situation we lost, just calculated:
Time ~20 minutes in total: €3,33
Packaging, labels, stickers etc.: €2,38
Shipping 2x and return payment: €38,26
Total:
€43,97
So we need to sell >10 books
To break even. Having a retail shop simply doesn’t make any sense. Because a larger and larger percentage is being either lost, stolen, returned or claimed.
After losing over 5 btc on this endeavor over the past 6 years, we persist. But it doesn’t make any economic sense.
