Your WIndows profile may be corrupt and you'll be unable to save your settings. If so you can create a new profile then try setting preferred programs and see if they stick through a restart.
If it's not a corrupt profile you should be able to fix that with a Group Policy edit if you're using 10 Pro or a Registry edit on any version. Because Reg edits are determined by the name of the edit you're making, I'm not sure if you would need to translate this or not.

Most settings in Windows will have an upper limit of information and once the file is filled it'll either delete it and restart or fail to save new changes.
You can change most of those limits by editing the Registry yourself but before that can you tell me what's changing in your file associations?

Truly? The possibility you didn't own a fridge crossed my mind but I thought I was being silly. Quite literally every home in America has a refrigerator. We even have them installed in temporary dwellings like campers and RVs.
I suppose your options would be to buy ice from a grocery store, but that's going to get expensive, purchase a small fridge with a "freezing compartment" or fill a squirt bottle with water and have a fan blow the water back at you.

I know it's janky but, given the trouble you're having with the heat, try freezing a couple bottles of water and setting them behind a fan. Be sure to pour some of the water out first so the ice doesn't break the bottle.
