But they weren't bad. That's not really my point. Reading the chapters and experiencing the story in a linear way also made sense. That's part of the joy of a book, it's an experience that takes time ...

@nprofile1q... I think about this and play with it all the time because of doing microfiction. The character limit for my instance of Mastodon is quite low, so if I want to write a story in one toot, I'm often thinning out words ... but then sometimes I want to enrich and expand the story, maybe to submit it to a flash fiction market.

"My problem with time sinks," said an owlish character who'd appeared out of nowhere, "is how quickly they get filled up, if you don't keep on top of cleanup, and then you don't even want to touch the time in them--so nasty and crusty--but you don't have any clean time anywhere, so ... One of the things I wrote, PEN PAL, is an epistolary novel that also contains diary entries, log notes, newspaper stories, and email exchanges. I daydreamed about how cool it would be to have a deluxe edition of the book where the letters were done in different handwriting fonts, on different papers, and the newspaper articles on newsprint, and the emails, printed out as emails, etc.

"the bourgeois assertion that art is a commodity โ€” not something that humans naturally do, but are kept away from โ€” has done terrible damage to our civilization." ---AMEN. Something that's crucial to the story I'm writing now.
