I didn’t grow up in Orkney. I grew up in a place with less wind and more trees.

One of the things they taught us in school was that if you don’t have a compass, you can generally work out direction by the moss on trees. Wind usually comes from the west, so moss is usually thinnest on the west side of a tree.

Similar thing here. The wind usually comes from the west, so any dry rain shadow will be on the eastern side of an object 💁
