There are 27 countries in the European Union. Twenty of them share the euro. That’s a huge number of very different economies trying to operate under one currency and one monetary policy — while each country has its own industries, trade balances, energy needs, demographics, and cultural priorities.
During the sovereign debt crises in Greece, Italy, Spain and others, we saw what that strain looks like in real life. It wasn’t just numbers on a spreadsheet. It was small businesses closing. Young people leaving their home countries to find work. Families facing unemployment, pension cuts, and years of uncertainty.
When national debts came to light, it exposed how different the underlying realities were beneath the surface — and the human cost of trying to hold very different economies to the same monetary constraints.
For me, this is about compassion. Economic structures are not abstract — they shape people’s lives. And any future for Europe should put the wellbeing of its families, workers, and communities first with more openness, honesty. accountability for those that run it .
