I need to warn you that I have very little patience for people who insinuate that getting out onto the streets and protesting is useless and not worth the effort.

It is terribly fashionable to be cynical about civil, peaceful protest. But it is deeply demoralising and often people can be easily dissuaded from making the effort by that cynicism.

No act that joins people together in protest for a better society is useless, even if only because it makes you feel less alone.

If Zarah Sultana MP had not entered this into the public record by saying it in the House of Commons on 14 April 2026, today it would be illegal to print this in any UK media. https://hansard.parliam...

I'm so glad she did. Because this criminalisation of speaking an actual, proveable FACT is obscene.

And, quite frankly, it is doing the Labour Party insane levels of damage which will last for years.

Ultimately, no amount of denial or surpressing of the reality of Gaza is going to erase what is happening there from the history books.

I just got a WhatsApp message from my friend in Tehran.

I don't want to speak for her, so I will just pass on her words:

I can't believe I'm alive
We had massive explosions in my neighbourhood
So close
So terrifying
Broke the windows
Shaked the building
I feel numb
The city is not the same
Neither people
Neither life

Then our connection dropped.

I remember watching a very wizened old tailor in Ho Chi Minh City sew an extra piece of the woven fabric of a suit into the inside jacket pocket.

Invisible mending techniques used to be very, very common in Asia, and you need a generous piece of the same fabric to weave it into place to cover a hole or tear.

I am sure he's passed on now, but that little act lives on in me.

The courtesy tailoring on a #kimono is the 'tomo eri' - the collar's friend. It's a piece half the length of the main collar which covers it and takes the wear and tear and can be removed or replaced. I add a little extra something - the fold of spare fabric hidden in the collar, that stiffens it, and also is there for repair. #sewing

Today I've begun a new project using some of the vintage tsumugi silk I found a while ago. As you can see, this tanmono isn't perfect. There's a rip in it very near the beginning of the bolt, which is easily avoided. The camera doesn't do this silk justice at all. It's a deep, deep indigo and black. But the silk is light as a feather. #Kimono #kosode #rethinking #sewing
