@nprofile1q... Heroku Buildpacks are an effort in cost reduction by pushing edge cases out to the community. Sort of like GitHub Actions. The corporate answer to "pull requests accepted" is "implement it yourself." The official ones we maintain are used by some competing services like Dokku and serve as an advertisement, as "Heroku" shows in the output/logs. (Also, I've had a credible report come from Dokku, which helped my customers.

@nprofile1q... Facebook/Meta originally invested in LLMs and open-sourced them in an effort to keep costs low, not because they were going to directly monetize them. (though not the best example, as that project has ceased).

For companies, the act of open-sourcing software is (in theory) an effort to reduce the cost. Heroku open sourced it's old router for apparently no reason. A competitor (windows focused PaaS) used it even. But when they found a bug and gave a good report, it was fixed. That was free labor.

@nprofile1q... For individuals, even if the expected upsides (fame/fortune/whatever) are low probability, the cost to open source something is low for a "scratch your own itch" project. Then there's the intangible/intrinsic motivators, which I think are stronger. It feels good to help people, to feel helpful. Even better if that person you're helping is future-you...

@nprofile1q... thanks for the recommendation.

I think it's left about "left to right" and more that I visually want to distinguish what I'm working on/with. I'm okay with a different paradigm.

Also open to the possibility that my preferences are just based on familiarity and I'll grow to like different things eventually.
