"Slow change is dangerous because once people forget the past, it’s easy to convince them of what wasn’t."

The Shinto religion emphasize purity, nature, life, birth and renewal, and thus Shinto shrines tend to have roofs covered in natural, short-lived, organic, materials such as straw, wood shingles, bark. The Buddhist religion in Japan emphasize permanency, eternity, longevity, robustness, and thus Buddhist temples tend to have roofs covered in long-lived inorganic materials such as tiles, copper, stone. Knowing this simple difference will help you understand and appreciate the metaphysical differences in traditional religious architecture in Japan. Of course this is just a general rule, and there are many exceptions, especially with urban shrines that tend to have inorganic roofs for fire safety codes, and rural temples that have organic roofs out of habit and necessity.

Study on how limiting urban sprawl would work in future Montreal, Canada. The city double in land use/size but the population only grew 25% between 1986 and 2016, showing how current urban growth is unsustainable. Findings are probably applicable everywhere in N Am. and Europe.

The Jinjiang Tulou in Fujian Province, is one of the most heavily fortified Hakka clan villages in China. Built in 1791 out of rammed earth on a stone foundation on 3,000m² for 28 families and expanded in 1803 to house about 45 more in the new inner tower structure. Unusually this tulou has a granite gatehouse for extra security against bandit and pirate attacks which were common at the time. All the families were related to the same founding ancestor, and all the individual rooms were of the same size but families had complete freedom in how to divide their rooms, usually they had a main hall and a bedroom but sometimes this was divided into up to three smaller bedrooms. The structure is just local soil but the clay plaster contains brown sugar molasses and sticky rice paste (which feeds microbes in soil that can heal minor cracks over time). The building was more or less abandoned from the 1990s and neglected until quite recently when it received cultural protection status and much needed repairs.

Zero concrete architecture in Japan. Villa Boso, an raised office with traditional wooden yoroikabe cladding and an interesting floor truss system. Not ideal in an any way but it is interesting that even architects are willing to look beyond concrete. The base is a steel pile take on traditional Japanese foundations. It looks to be well built to resist earthquakes.
