One lesser known fact about the Quran is that every recitation / reading (AKA qirā2āt) used today is faithful to the Uthmatic script (consonantal skeleton) which goes back to the first generation of Muslims.

Some issues with the Uthmanic script:
- It didn't represent short vowels.
- It only had 15 letters to represent 28 consonant phonemes.

Although every reading technically is a copy of the Uthmanic script, the short vowels and some consonants differ. To me, it is evidence that before making the writing more phonetic, the early Muslims were mostly relying on the text to preserve the Quran. They were not relying on recitation as much as tradition holds.

Some say the differences are only dialectal but dialects don't work that way. They don't magically only change some vowels and consonants that just so happen to have been ambiguous in an old writing system.

That creates some differences in meanings too. For instance, it isn't clear if one has to wash their feet or simply wipe them when doing the ablutions. It depends which reading you are reading and how you interpret a short vowel at the end of a word.

This is why the Sunni wash their feet but the Shia only wipe them.
