long story short i ended up making a fresh Trixie install, which took 1-2h total, after spending a good 6h trying to figure that out... with dependency hell on a systemd-resolved that was _not_ installed in what appeared to have been a badly updated (!) system....

lessons learned: i think i dislike systemd even more now, and will stick to devuan on my main machine.... debian still r0x though.

@nprofile1q... also very often when tech elite answers questions like "should i use techX?" their answer is a very lazy and arcane way of not saying "stop bothering me", instead of explaining multiple layers of complex and dis-heartening reality. (and rather give rotten frozen fish from the US than actually teaching how to fish!)

@nprofile1q... fundamentally i don't want to bear responsibility for the terrible choices that have became the norm... If activists get jailed bcs they were using "smartphones" it won't be my fault.

Also it's a reflection on the actual power of prescription. People seen as knowledgeable have immense power with their words/choices.

Tech elite ppl speak without thinking, and many people just follow.

As a hermit i now just do my own stuff. If ppl are interested they can pass by my cabin in the woods...

@nprofile1q... On the question of "advertising" tech in particular, it's been 5-10y that i tried actively to just _stop doing it_. I regularly have questions of people looking up to me because they think i understand things (!) about tech.. "should i use techX?" / "what do you think of techX?" / "is techX better than techY?" etc.

Had to find new ways of NOT answering, not because i didnt want to help, but because my own choices are different, and because all sh#t is broken.

@nprofile1q... yes same. I say that i don't have a smartphone.. (and secretly awaits with delight the moment that same person would see me with a rectangular square device and go in an inquisitive way "AH but this IS a smartphone!!" and i could be "NO, this is actually a *linuxphone*. Do you know about GNU/linux? do you want to know more?...")

And yeah the tech we built and promoted so enthusiastically waved "f*ck you!" to us and turned its back.

I stopped promoting anything ages ago. It's hard...

OK so here is a beginning of a plan:

1/ find the browser (or fork of firefox for now) that one can transition to;

2/ keep one instance of firefox for one and only one purpose:

- typing (and automating the typing) of what we truly think about mozilla, firefox and their overlord google ("F*CK OFF FIREFOX", etc. )

- granting them a "nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use" *that* sort of input coming from us, and only that!

- let them train LLM and "help us navigate" with that!
