One Precept of Karate is to "first understand yourself, then understand others". I'm still struggling with the first part. Perhaps one day I'll feel ready to tackle the latter. #karate #martialarts

1762. A shipwreck. A notebook. The Ōshima Hikki is one of the first written records linking Okinawan fighting arts to Chinese techniques. History sometimes survives by accident. #karate #martialarts

Most people don't understand the meaning of the word "Shotokan" to describe Funakoshi's karate style. It came from his students who named his dojo after his pen name ("Shoto"), together with the Japanese kanji for hall/house ("kan"). Basically, they started going to practice at "Funakoshi's place". In other words, they started going to "Shoto kan". Over time, it became the name of the whole style. Funakoshi never meant to start an entire movement. He just wanted to teach karate. #karate #martialarts

You know the kata Kanku Dai? It's named after Kusanku, a Chinese martial artist who visited Okinawa in the 1700s. It is said to have been Gichin Funakoshi's favorite form and one I love to train on a regular basis. Di you know every kata carries a piece of history in its name? #karate #martialarts

Not entirely sure what that means. I'm just getting to know bitcoin and nostr cultures and they're fascinating! If someone like me has come across them, it's because they are both growing I suppose. I started hearing about nostr as something separated from bitcoin: as free speech, as no-bans, as no-algos, as owning your content. It was a surprise to me initially that most/all accounts on here were from bitcoiners (which makes sense to me now, especially with the awesome zap feature). I think it's important to continue to promote both cultures independently, each in their own right (at least that's how I'm explaining it to my friends: "bitcoin is fascinating, oh by the way, have you heard about this great new protocol for social media?", and not "do you know bitcoiners have their own chat thing called nostr?"). Perhaps I'm wrong, but this is my initial impression as a newcomer. Hopefully there's room for some karate culture in the mix 🤣. I foresee all 3 cultures to grow together in the future 💪🥋

My simplified explanation of how scoring works in Kumite (sparring) competitions under World Karate Federation rules:
- "Yuko" (1 point): punch or hand strike to the head or body (jodan + chudan).
- "Waza-ari" (2 points): kick to the body (chudan).
- "Ippon" (3 points): kick to the head (jodan) or any hand strikes to a thrown or fallen opponent (kicking while downed is a foul).

Did you know that the World Karate Federation uses a very simple point-based system and rules for Kumite (sparring) competitions? Only clean, controlled techniques that meet all six criteria count: good form, sporting attitude (no intent to injure), vigorous application (speed + power), zanshin (awareness, you must stay focused on your opponent after the technique, without turning away or falling), good timing, and correct distance. We practice this constantly in the dojo, so it comes naturally on the day of the big fight. #karate #martialarts

Shotokan Karate is based on Bushido and Budo, but most people don't know what it means. Bushido is the Code of the Samurai, all about honor, loyalty and fighting spirit. Budo is the Way of the Warrior, the modern martial way that turned combat into self-mastery, all about conquering yourself through discipline, respect, and inner growth. #karate #martialarts

Why did they change "Chinese Hand" to "Empty Hand"? Japan was becoming more nationalist. Keeping the Chinese characters was politically risky. One kanji swap rewrote an entire identity. #karate #martialarts
