'Kitsch' is used less as a term or value judgment. But until well into the 20th c., that was the name for a late 19th-c. design like this.

Small publication from 1926 by Leopoldine Bechstädt, who also worked for the Wiener Werkstätte. In this educational publication, the Dutch distributor promotes the Redis (Speedball-b) pens for freehand drawings.

Never loaned out at Worcester public library UK according to the date due slip. In December 1926—probably also the year of publication—it was acquired, and every leaf got stamped. Although Art Deco was already flourishing on the continent, Neo-Gothic remained popular among the British for a long time. For the plates, Quaritch borrowed from the famous model book by Shaw that he had published. This 1853 anthology was also well known in the Netherlands.

English and American lettering is world-famous, but German lettering is often more exciting. German lettering books are well produced. This small introduction was published as part of a series that also includes *How to Draw Trees* and *How to Draw Architecture*. Incidentally, Sigmund von Weech (1888–1982) made his name primarily as a textile designer.

My research into lettering model books, leaves these types of examples largely out of consideration. They appeared in trade magazines for house and decorative painters. Often they are of a slightly lower technical and artistic standard, but due to their wide distribution, they have undoubtedly been influential. Example c. 1940.
