This is cover art by Paul Alexander for the novel Guardian by Thomas Monteleone.

I always liked this cover art. But whenever I saw it, I was reminded of the TTRPG Traveller. Not any other game, just Traveller.

I finally figured out why. The characters are carrying long arms, not pistols. Since basic Traveller does not have laser pistols, players who want to pack a punch are forced to carry rifles.

Other games have blaster pistols and other compact weapons.

Scifi Mastodon, please help me

I am trying to remember the name and author of a scifi short story I read a few decades ago. I usually manage to find these things myself, but this one is fighting me tooth and nail.

I thought it was "Dear Demon" or "Dear Devil" but no.

An alien in the wilderness finds some abandoned human babies. It does it's best to raise them to adulthood.

Magazine cover illustration shows lizard like alien in cave rocking a baby to sleep.

Sound familiar?
