Depends on which government you’re talking about. There are very few sovereign governments left in the world. In the western world, most governments are captured by the financial industrial complex. China is sovereign and with its capital controls intends to stay that way and you’re right they are extremely authoritarian in order to accomplish that goal.
I think the authoritarianism coming to the United States, however, will not be in service of national sovereignty even if it is spun that way by propagandists. Rather, it will be a mechanism to maintain order while the financial industrial complex asset strips what remains of western civilization for as long as there’s anything worth harvesting.
The resulting societal unrest will be met with authoritarianism - AI monitoring our digital lives, camera surveillance to track us in meatspace, pre-crime to keep us in line, etc.
There will continue be heavy-handed demagoguery from both sides of the political spectrum but this is all theater to keep the ants fighting among themselves instead of fighting back against the grasshoppers.
Ultimately, westerners will be subjected to a combination nanny state and control grid that while unsustainable in the long-term will maintain enough enough order for the locusts to strip mine hundreds of years of accumulated civilization wealth. Then the locusts will spread to fresh soil elsewhere (Global South) and those of us left in the ruins of the West will have to rebuild. I think NOSTR, Bitcoin and other freedom tech will permit those of us who see what’s coming to weather this storm and our descendants will benefit from our foresight and be able to rebuild.
