The tennis court booking website our local courts use has one of the most cursed account & login systems I've seen around:
- You need an account for each court operator. The outdoor courts are run by our club, indoor courts by the municipality. So everyone needs two accounts. 4 people in our family play tennis, so, 8 accounts. 😰
- Login account name is THE SURNAME. So those 8 accounts all have the same login name but different passwords. 🤯 Password manager browser plugins aren't made for this.

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... There's also a lot of trade secrets in fabbing, and probably a fair few patents that make replicating DRAM production rather difficult for a new player.
Aside from the fact that it takes multiple years between breaking ground on a new fab and starting production even for the established players.
(I also suspect getting hold of the necessary lithography machines isn't going to be easy for a new company when the existing ones have them on multi-year back-orders.)

Am I right in thinking these two capacitors look dodgy and could be the reason why the PDU on my desk no longer powers on?
If I replace them, is there a type of capacitor I should pick that would be longer lasting? This device is only 3 years old so if they‘ve failed in that time, that suggests to me they‘re being run beyond spec - voltage, temperature?

@nprofile1q... I'm slightly less optimistic about our current health trajectory - although it certainly wouldn't need to be.
Medical, and especially pharmaceutical research is largely focused on areas of highest potential profitability. Cancer research is achieving amazing results.
But climate collapse is accelerate vector-based infectious diseases because it's increasing the range and population of vector organisms.
And habitat distruction is driving zoonotic transmissions.

Very curious what the reasoning is here. Either cellebrite has got 100x better and faster and can wirelessly pwn a phone with NFC and BT and wifi disabled in a second or two using an antenna disguise...

@nprofile1q... I don't know about precheck or the US more broadly, but I've had my stuff explosives-swabbed numerous times by airport security in a few countries. It just seems to be a random thing, and I guess it makes sense to swab your phone because it's something most people touch after just about any activity, so there's a high chance they'll find traces of substances you've been handling.

The CI situation definitely needs work; I'm going to have to look into how I might go about having runners spawn and run jobs in ephemeral VMs. As if I wasn't already busy enough protecting myself against enshittification from every other angle.

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... This kind of stuff has been a mainstay of new-age mysticism in German-speaking countries for decades. (They call the EM radiation “Elektrosmog” which I guess helps to paper over the fact that EM waves don’t behave like airborne particles.) At various times you were supposed to have crystals around your house to absorb the radiation, or put shields around your wifi access points (lol), or install plug-in devices to “capture” it, etc.
