@Phil Dennis-Jordan

I'm into slow travel, wildlife watching/photography, various techy stuff both inside and outside my work, and I‘m doing my best raising a bunch of kids. Hope to have time for video and board games again one of these years.
Work wise, I’m an independent software developer mostly in systems, device driver, embedded, and virtualisation. I make GPUs do things people think only CPUs can do.
Small biz owner with anticapitalist leanings.
Virus & bacterial infections are bad, we should prevent them 😷.

@nprofile1q... >10 years ago, I had finally been conclusively diagnosed with long-term Lyme disease infection after years of symptoms. Lyme being caused by a particularly resilient type of bacteria, the cure involves multiple rounds of a mix of antibiotics. (Mostly because different medications reach different body tissues.)
I remember being lectured by a friend's pharmacist wife about taking so many antibiotics being bad for my (gut) health and… I mean, yes it is, but so is dying of Lyme disease?

@nprofile1q... I'm slightly less optimistic about our current health trajectory - although it certainly wouldn't need to be.
Medical, and especially pharmaceutical research is largely focused on areas of highest potential profitability. Cancer research is achieving amazing results.
But climate collapse is accelerate vector-based infectious diseases because it's increasing the range and population of vector organisms.
And habitat distruction is driving zoonotic transmissions.

Very curious what the reasoning is here. Either cellebrite has got 100x better and faster and can wirelessly pwn a phone with NFC and BT and wifi disabled in a second or two using an antenna disguise...

@nprofile1q... I don't know about precheck or the US more broadly, but I've had my stuff explosives-swabbed numerous times by airport security in a few countries. It just seems to be a random thing, and I guess it makes sense to swab your phone because it's something most people touch after just about any activity, so there's a high chance they'll find traces of substances you've been handling.

I wished forgejo had competent CI and pages capabilities. That's really the major reason why e.g. Freedesktop wouldn't be able to migrate away from gitlab. Because with a project as huge as outs, hav...

@nprofile1q... For pages, you could try @nprofile1q...'s git-pages/Grebedoc. https://grebedoc.dev/
The CI situation definitely needs work; I'm going to have to look into how I might go about having runners spawn and run jobs in ephemeral VMs. As if I wasn't already busy enough protecting myself against enshittification from every other angle.

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... This kind of stuff has been a mainstay of new-age mysticism in German-speaking countries for decades. (They call the EM radiation “Elektrosmog” which I guess helps to paper over the fact that EM waves don’t behave like airborne particles.) At various times you were supposed to have crystals around your house to absorb the radiation, or put shields around your wifi access points (lol), or install plug-in devices to “capture” it, etc.

@nprofile1q... Thanks I will try that - and I’ll provide a documentation PR clarifying it if I get it working. 😅
My goal is also to create custom images, but I’m less concerned with how the components are built, and more with which packages are included. So I’m hoping to reduce image size (In the direction of the minimal pkg base you’ve been experimenting with according to another blog post.)

Large verimg(8) update just landed in its [1] repo. What other features would You like verimg(8) to have? [1] https://github.com/vermaden/verimg https://media.bsd.cafe/bsdmmedia01/media_attachments...
Phil Dennis-Jordan profile picture
@nprofile1q... I've just been looking at your verimg tool - it looks pretty useful for my purposes! One thing I'm curious about is why it's built around locally-built pkgs. Is there a good reason not to use pkgs from the central repository for building images? (The spare SFF PC I'm experimenting with as an orchestration host has a fairly weak CPU.)

@nprofile1q... For bridging a similar gap, I got one of those optical Thunderbolt/USB4 cables (15 metres!) and put a Thunderbolt hub on the other end. That comes with a XHCI controller for the classic USB devices, so it doesn’t matter that the optical cable lacks the legacy data pair.
Probably not the cheapest solution, and requires a USB4/TB capable host.
