He needs to be told that fear is sinful when placed above the fear of God.

This man fears life without substance abuse more than he fears the perfect wrath of God.

Instead of trying to figure it out himself, he should use his sin as an opportunity to throw himself at the throne of God, begging for mercy, declaring his incredible need, and trusting that God will hold him and provide rest.
