I don't think you're wrong that authoritarian control is part of the goal. To a great extent I think the generation of massive amounts of text and images is intended to deaden people's minds and feelings by overwhelming them with material of no value. And then when they begin using these "tools" themselves, the cycle is complete : they suppose that they have transplanted their own creativity and inquisitiveness to the machine, but really they have only suppressed it.
