i think my frustration is that Stancil clearly plays a important role in the info ecosystem, and it would be good if media did pay attention to it. but the verge turns out to have a surface level understanding that doesnt go beyond 'Stancil creates outrage, and we should participate for clicks'
like, what is this story even about? is it about ICE in Minneapolis? Then why center only Stancil? Is it about how the Online has fused with the Offline? Stancils role in Online discourse and how that materially impacts the real political world is interesting, but this ridealong story aint that
but sure tell me more about how the verge's disclosure policies are gonna save journalism
this isnt to dunk on atproto, more to say that open social networking protocols are extremely powerful with society-level warping second order effects
in all seriousness: this is terrifying news, and how this stuff will intersect with open protocols does actually keep me up at night
and for real spicy hot takes i think at this point this might actually be a stronger effect as to why EU politicians are on X than arguments about reach
but we're pretty far from that still, and I think just the contrast between Geese needing VLOPs to exist for the DSA in its current form to work vs Hlatky building a network thats exempt from the DSA is already worth pointing out
Pretty sure this is what they meant with βthe purpose of a system is what it doesβ
