This goes the other way too…many of them don’t understand US weather. And why some no-name Paris politician tried to make a name for herself by blaming US air conditioners for the weather in Europe which is what the post was mocking.

Maybe they like Communism because under that system food becomes scarce and they would lose weight?

Do I care? Not a bit. I’m glad the US hosted it as people are seeing a more realistic view of what it’s like here and, hopefully, some businesses made money.

But do I care about the matches themselves? Nope.

You are free to believe he’s lying about why he got banned…but given the time it is perfectly reasonable to believe the story that he was banned because he wouldn’t censor legal speech in the US. It was all the rage on most platforms back then. Heck, he’s shown letters from governments demanding he give over info and ban accounts for legal speech in the US and he’s told them to pack sand. Maybe he faked all that too, but it seems believable given the laws those governments have enacted so he gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

Like I said, I don’t care for the guy personally and don’t want to live in a place where he would get to set real world (as opposed to online) policies. But I give him credit for trying to build parallel infrastructure and ecosystems that do serve people who think like him and where you don’t get banned for merely expressing ideas. To me, that matters and the world is better for it. Yes, the social tides have shifted towards sanity in the US recently but they could just as easily swing back the other way.

Cloudflare has been one of the few to stand up and not cancel them. But both major cloud services, Joyent, several DNS registrars, and a ridiculous number of banks and payment providers have done so. My guess is activists have figured out what they are using and started campaigns and these folks just didn’t want the hassle. On one hand I get it but, on the other, it’s sad that these companies will sever ties to paying customers for, essentially, political reasons. He tried basing his code based on on ActivityPub (that actually how I came to know it) and you can only imagine the uproar. Most of the apps hard coded in blocks to his site which, to me, goes against the spirit of the project…let users and instances make blocking decisions.

Maybe he’s full of shit here. I can’t possibly know for sure. He has produced receipts in the past. I don’t really have a dog on the fight but I want to live in a world where stuff like Gab exists because I actually believe in free anonymous expression even when that means it’s from people I disagree with strongly about a lot of things.

And people wonder why men are walking away from marriage or even cohabitating. I live in a sane state, so far at least, but they are pricing out men from long term close relationships.

I really like the groups. That’s pretty much the only place I spend time there. The main timeline is pretty awful but the groups are nice because they tend to be subject focused so you get less of the idiocy. I can only read so many crazy political takes in a day. But I don’t get that in the stock market group or the cigars group or the whisky group. I do wish there were more active communities like that here. Maybe there are but I haven’t found them. I had hopes for Lemmy but so far I haven’t found anything close to what Gab groups are.

Gab can’t use hosting companies…they tried and kept getting cancelled so they’ve had to host everything themselves. It’s the only way to not get censored. When governments and banks try to cancel you, hosting companies and cloud providers fold quickly.

I agree he needs more redundancy though. While I don’t agree with Torba about much, I respect his commitment to free speech and believe he should have a fair shot at a business. It’s also why I run my own instance here on my own gear. I’ve seen what big tech had tried over the years…

RIPE is threatening to pull their ASN. Pretty sure that will hurt them in Europe … not sure about the rest of the world.
