Software development has changed dramatically over the past 40 years and we all are facing changes that aren't necessarily good. I remember, a few years ago I met a software developer – an acquiantance I knew only distantly. He told me that he is happy to work in software development instead of IT administration because he can still use his knowledge from 15 years ago because the tools were mostly the same as the were then – unlike in system administration, where everything seems to change constantly. But this doesn't seem to be true any more.

I found this interesting thoughts shared by software developer James Randall. Quite depressing, but so true...

Anyone else here got the impression that YouTube became completely unusable? When I open it, I only get shitloads of AI generated headless slob. When did that happen?

Sounds encouraging. More than 10 years ago I moved my email to one of these large internet providers. Mainly because it was cheap. At the beginning, they charged less than 12€ per year and I got 5 GB per mailbox and up to 25 mailboxes. But slowly they increased their prices, from 12 to 19€ per year, from 19 to 36 and now it’s 5€ per month. The emails are not encrypted, there is literally no support (Which I never needed, tbh) and if they want to, they can say: Hey, our prices stayed the same for more than four years now, so we have to increase again. Not that I can’t afford it, but I don’t like the feeling of not being in control.

Ever heard about Qubes OS?
If not, it might be worth watching this video made by David Bombal. As usual, skip the Protonmail ad and take everything with a grain of salt. The rest is a real good description of how it is to work with Qubes.

Qubes OS isn’t for everyone and it’s very likely that it isn’t for you. But if you are a journalist, activist or just a person interested in highly secure operating systems, it could be worth a look. I tried it from time to time, but I think it doesn’t match my thread scenario. It causes a lot of friction, requires a different approach in doing your stuff and it eats your RAM.

But for those who aren’t scared:

Looks like another bad move from Apple. Removing ICE Block from their App Store, an app which was designed to alert people when there is an ICE mob nearby, just to protect their relationship with their government sounds questionable to me.
