@nprofile1q... the ones that really did it for me are these 12800 year old megalithic structures. According to the old timeline, they MUST have been built by hunter gatherers at the end of the last ice age🧐.

No way, the idea that you go from foraging to moving and lifting 12 ton stones and doing architecture and stone carving. Impossible. It seems there were real civilizations that were destroyed by cataclysmic events we haven’t fully identified, and all of this is obscured by the veil of time.

@nprofile1q... and as I go down the rabbit hole on this, this span of time includes two glacial maximum periods where sea levels would have been 380’ lower, much of the far north would have seemed like Antarctica, and humans lived among megafauna.

What I learned in school about the linear development of civilization has now been disproven in a few key areas that push dates back a long way, but maybe more importantly is the record of total civilization collapse that has happened a lot of times.

@nprofile1q... I enjoy immensely the scenes of just sailing/rowing across the sea, and it reminds me that things didn’t really change much for humans between then and 200 years ago when the Industrial Revolution got into full swing, and how much that changed everything about humanity. The anthropological record proves that blue water seafaring is at least 50,000 years old, and for most of that time, we have no clue how they did it beyond conjecture. The timescale defies belief.

@nprofile1q... interesting that chuds didn’t flip out over The Return or O’ Brother Where Art Though as the most recent Hollywood adaptations (former very faithful, latter an interpretation). I kind of think constant posting about whatever is in the zeitgeist is melting brains as influencer types try to stake out some novel or controversial position on it for the views.

No one is going to care if you liked it and got Nolan’s points, but maybe if you say it’s destroying the classics, someone will react

@nprofile1q... I was wondering where we’d have a localized chat group about The Odyssey. I saw it last night (in IMAX as recommended), and thought it was excellent. I’m glad it came across as a powerful anti-war movie, and a lot of the stylistic and musical choices were novel and satisfying. Especially appreciated blending brutal realism with magical beings and events.

If people don’t like this film, wtf is their capacity to enjoy anything?

@nprofile1q... it reminds me that the dumbest and worst person in my grad program was also intensely ambitious, as well as being one of those outspoken Christians who is always going on about the persecution she is suffering for her beliefs. Of course she ended up as a state rep within 3-4 yrs of finishing the program.
