Let me just say... Synapse documentation is bad. Like really, really bad.
However, despite that I managed to scale my instance with generic and media workers. Now it just zooms!
(I also wiped it and started fresh to remove "matrix" from my homeserver name, because it bothered me...)

With Mastodon you just tunnel Puma and Streaming...
@nprofile1q... Synapse expects a very direct path from it to the target, so proxying it through Nginx, then tunnel, then cf just resulted in a desynced mess

So had to go back to VPS. At least I saved some money by switching to IPv6 fully and utilizing NAT64 to federate.
Maybe I'll give homelab Synapse another go in the future.

Hmm I'm at a crossroads...
I self-host my Matrix instance, have some encrypted rooms there, chat with people from other instances. Works fine.
But Hetzner just raised the prices, and my backups are ...
As it turns out - my wife's old laptop happens to be a perfect homelab Matrix server.
Just needed to disconnect and rip out the broken screen, disable GPU in BIOS, take out CD drive and a few misc stuff not needed in the server (like SD Card reader) and it runs nicely!
i5-4210U, 8 GB RAM, 480 GB SSD - Matrix Synapse instance runs just as smooth as it did on Hetzner CX33 VPS.
Now only to configure remote backups to S3, local backups to external HDD and we're golden

@nprofile1q... sadly I don't have appropriate hardware. Or rather - I do have a very good hardware, that would run Synapse no problem, the only issue is - it's RISC-V. And as far as I know, there's no official or unofficial RISC-V docker image of Synapse (which I would prefer). I also am not sure if it can be run bare-metal, just as a Python service.

Still cheaper than buying a dedicated hardware to self host outright, but getting close.

What do I do... Suck it up, or just switch to public instance...

Hyper specific, only for Polish people. Python program to grab PM10 and NO2 data from your local air quality station via GIOŚ API and notify you through Ntfy if their concentration is higher than the limit recommended by GIOŚ (or set by you).
It even has a binary release!
