although even connecting to 3rd party nodes in monero gives you a reasonable good privacy - if not pretty good privacy - you should nevertheless run your own.

for the beginning, don't make a big fuss about it. just download monero from getmonero.org and run monerod. that's it. congratulations, you're a node runner now.
