He himself confessed that he engaged in the crime to protect the Taliban and Muslims, so the federal government has every incentive to reassign him to life without parole to avoid the more disastrous outcome: creating an extremist martyr.

Then there's the party of children and pious christian family values advocating for a public execution by firing squad. Permitting a sizeable chunk of these Americans to actually *see* what an execution is would likely drive public sentiment wildly against capital punishment and the regimes push to accelerate its implementation.
