Oh ffs. In 2026 alone dozens of journalists have been killed, murdered, by Israel, Russia and the USA. The White House has at the best of times been silent on this, and at other times actively argued the murdered journalists were at fault.

The reporters / journalists reporting on "the white house" barely questioned this.

And now you're the victim? For an event where in the end nothing happened, and with anything extremely unlikely to happen in the first place? Fuck off.

I helped a colleague plan a family holiday trip from the Netherlands to Austria. Upsold an extended over three hour transfer window in Hannover centre as a fun micro-city-getaway you can't easily do with car or plane.

I didn't mention the alternative reason: if their first train craps up they'll miss the connection and in mid-summer are unlikely to get nice alternative seating for their family of four..

Anyway. They ARE actually super excited about the micro-city-getaway :-)

From May 2 to May 4 toddler and I will be taking a trip to Berlin.

We'll be leaving and arriving at Berlin Hbf and are still looking for accommodation.

I'd be grateful for any tips on affordable accommodation on walking (a kilometre or two is fine, bit more as well depending on the route) distance from Berlin central station.

We do not need much except that toddler very much prefers a private bathroom and no bedbugs.

Gosh, just imagine if one day Siemens manages to design and produce a battery powered Siemens Mireo Plus. It'll instantly make these hydrogen versions a solution of the past.

Apparently I'm now a smoke detector influencer. So:

- Use them.

- Good detectors are affordable. Don't buy crap.

- Wired solutions with battery backup are best.

- Connected solutions are good (one detector triggers all alarms).

- Respect the service life advice.

- Don't buy from stores with dodgy supply chains (Amazon, Wish, Shein etc.)

- Each country has their own good brands. Buy what is "big" local and recommended by consumer orgs.

- Linux is not the answer.

Periodical reminder the European Commission runs something called Safety Gate.

It's an easy way to find out whether that niche and/or dodgy thing you bought has been part of an official recall anywhere in the single market.

Apart of branded stuff where the manufacturer made a genuine error there's also the utter crap (often sold by Amazon, don't buy there) like the murderous brush cutter chainsaw attachments that keep popping up.

I'll start. It's the story that triggered this question :)

It's about the time a new technician at work did something stupid.

We received an industrial computer controlled machine with fire damage. Goal was to restore it to the state it had a seconds before the fire started.

The new tech got a simple task: disassemble the included PC (which only had minor smoke damage) and label the parts. Procedure is that we replace parts where it makes sense.

So he discarded the 3½-inch floppy drive.

Onvoorstelbaar dat zoiets ooit in Nederland zou kunnen. Voor ons is dit soort dingen te moeilijk geworden. Overigens moet ik ook nog maar zien of het deze landen wel lukt in de praktijk!

Het technische principe lijkt redelijk simpel (en, weet ik uit ervaring in een supermarkt met een internet storing, werkt). Je denkt dat het dan vooral niet gaat werken in NL vanwege een cultuur issue?
