Just to be on the absolute safe side, I would make sure to have a battery capable of putting out 2.5 amps. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. #Meshtastic #MeshCore nos...

Yup, and if voltage sags in the cold (-30c), this happens. Volts down, amps up. The dc-dc boost converter didnt like the abuse. That's part of the reason I'm switching to NiCd batteries, and Li-Ion batteries freak me out unattended in a forest, because of fire risk, abused from charging in the cold too...

I removed the blown converter and it still works when powering the base board and transmitter board individually, so using it with 5v external now.

Operating at low battery percentage probably could do it too... I guess.

Just bought a bunch of NiCad batteries to use in my Meshtastic/Meshcore nodes instead of lithium ions... Well see how well they work, but I think it'll be safer especially since they are unattended in a forest, and maybe they will work better in the harsh winter temps (-30c frequently).

I've had bad voltage sags on cold days from my lithium ion batteries that cause weird reboots and other stuff. Probably hard on the batteries charging in the cold too.

I absolutely don't want to start a forest fire in the summer because of a hurt battery, from my dumb mesh nerd activities.

Its that time of year that I need my truck again. Its been sitting for a couple months, just collecting snow. I should have cleared it off a few more times while it sat... I got lazy with it and now the roof is dented in a lil.

I had a chance tonight to go hang my birdhouse style node in the forest. So far it is excellent! The place I found is reachable from all the other nodes, so messaging reliability will be pretty good now I think!

My next one I hope to make look a bit nicer and also have it be a functional birdhouse, with no exposed antennas or anything. The drywall screw jar was just the only thing I had around, but really it is too big.

Aren't those gourd shaped birdhouses the ones that are usually much taller? Usually they're grouped together too. Could almost reserve one entire gourd for all the equipment. Might be able to mount the solar perpendicular 5 or 6ft up the pole as a so you can still clean it alas needed but also I thi...

I love this man. How's the mesh where you are?

I live about 30 km from the city, so the mesh is just myself, a friend, and a couple other local guys. This node will help relay across a forest that is between us all, and so far its great! I just installed it tonight. I'll upload my Blair witch style video hah.

The closest city is Ottawa, which has a really impressive mesh, both mestastic and meshcore (everyone has been switching to meshcore because it seems to handle largecityy mesh's better). We are trying to get nodes setup high enough now to hopefully join that mesh soon.

What a rushed hack job this was... Built this little solar #meshtastic node to hang in a tree just now, while my son is napping. Now I need to figure oit how to get it up there.

It's an RAK board, with 12w of solar panels I got used, cedar shims, zip ties, a battery I modified from a pair of heated socks, a drywall screw jar, and a CV boot from a 2008 Hyundai accent I had spare.

Dude, these disguised as bird houses would be sick

you should put a svivel on the top and a little vertical spiral wind turbine with a coil spring that causes it to naturally spin back and forth so its coverage pattern sweeps, evading radio dead spots
