Sadly, many are still hopeful that the existing controlling and centralized system can be fixed from within; from within the same system that created the problems that have dehumanized and demoralized. The same system that created and will continually propel the hopeless, damaged and cynical state of affairs all around. You said it correctly, we were all there at one point.
