Here’s the latest state of a WIP prototype branch. We’re still going to do a design pass to improve things; maybe removing the card styling of results (since each section isn’t activatable, but results within are).

There’s more to do, and again: this light style is an off-by-default accessibility setting that I’ve been testing with to ensure it will work, but we don’t plan to ship a light shell by default in 51 afaik.

But you can at least see some progress. :)

@nprofile1q... it’s still being refined, but over all it’s much less of a context switch and feels less jarring than completely taking over the screen. The background does get dimmed just like other modal interactions (not visible in these early prototype screenshots) which helps with the focus while making the spatial model make more sense.

Let us cook, then give it a try. 😉

@nprofile1q... the current search just comes from nowhere and takes over the whole screen; it's a big context shift and is one of the only things in modern GNOME without a clear spatial model. Plus, it's hard to make it accessible to folks with trouble reading light-on-dark without making the entire screen blindingly white.

Something like this makes search feel faster and less overwhelming.

It’s more spatial (the search window comes from somewhere instead of just… taking over the screen), but for light style users like me: it should actually be more accessible, too!

One more step on the path to a proper light style Shell.

I swear I have a real job…

I’m home after #TrustCon where @nprofile1q... was EVERYWHERE. We presented in 6 sessions across 3 days, largely thanks to @nprofile1q.... Even when we weren’t in a session, we got countless shout-outs from T&S pros encouraging folks to adopt our tools. And we discovered some huge users of our tools that we had no idea about!

A year ago, ROOST was an idea that was hatching—now we’re changing the industry, centered on open source & collaboration. And we’re just getting started!
