With all the sad news coming out of Minneapolis, I had missed that the Westfield Mall had closed for good after such a long agony. I worked next door for years and have fond memories. I was a fan of the Loving Hut and spent many breaks walking around its rooftop POPO. It was an anchor for downtown, so its strange its gone for good.

The federal administration now appears poised to push for a mid-decade census. A truly unprecedented move. The stated goal is clear: to reduce population counts in “blue” states by excluding as many people as possible. While the focus is currently on undocumented residents, I wouldn’t be surprised if non-immigrant visa holders and other legally present but non-citizen residents are targeted as well.

We had a discussion about the redistricting proposal today. California organized labor will 100% support it. Across the state, labor leaders are very clear about what the proposal means. It is a Rubicon moment, but one they feel they're being dragged across. Doing nothing means a likely loss in 2026 and perhaps no 2028 election at all.

Things are rough in the US right now, but when I check Guanajuato's crime stats, it's downright shocking. Between January and May this year, 13.3% of Mexico's murders happened there. No other state comes close. That's just insane. Thankfully things seem to be getting better, but it will take months for it get to "normal" murder levels.
