The problem is, people in tech don't tend to have a systems thinking background. It's something they're thrust into and figure out, and that's part of why we chase silver bullets: someone threw something against a wall that stuck long enough, and we call it best practice. Until it fails, and the next accidentally discovered thing takes its place.

Is this a defense of Hamas? Absolutely not.

@nprofile1q... Hamas are untrustworthy. They filled a void, and the current Israeli government propped them up as a useful opponent to justify their policies with, which involve genocide and displacement, and colonising Palestinian land.

I can clearly say that outside of either side's "leadership", nobody wins. I mourn for them.

Where you draw the line between the despicable leadership, their fervent supporters, their misguided supporters, etc up to those that just try to survive every day, I ...

@nprofile1q... ... than I'd like to count. It was common practice all over Europe to leave criminals rotting in cages before cities, have their heads on pikes outside the city gates. "We've moved beyond that" my ass, it's just shoved under a thin veneer that threatens to shatter whenever a conflict gets personal.

Is this example you react to particularly despicable? Absolutely! But it's also, sadly, one in a long line that spans cultures.

Examples of mass graves of the enemy abound: we've seen Russians do this to Ukranians, we've seen Israelis do this to Palestinians. We've seen US soldiers do a version of that in Iraq. The disrespect for the enemy runs deep.

In the US, executions may be televised. The French revolution, irrespective of its goals, used public executions as a propaganda tool. Public hangings, stoning, etc. exist in more places...

Most cultures do a version of that, which is the same thing in reverse: we parade the bodies of fallen soldiers or VIPs with utmost pomp and ceremony. It says "this is the example by which we prove we're better than you", but of course we're FAR to civilized to say that out loud. We'll let the rest of the world infer that by... not treating anyone else the same way.
