I would like to pay a human designer to revamp my professional website. I’d prefer to help a marginalized designer impacted by AI. Questions for the fediverse: how much is fair to pay, and how would I go about finding someone like this?

Open source licenses are predicated on imposing no restrictions on use cases. But if the technology is truly neutral, as so many claim, then the use cases are all that’s left for ethical evaluation.

When you have to choose, do you want ethical or open? Is it still ecocide if the weights are open?

Need something to do this fine autumn Sunday? Why not hang out with me in the studio?

Today I’m working on putting together some transitions/interstitials for an upcoming live show. There will be some patch diving looking for a signature sound for the motif, some sample editing, and general music nerdery. No ads, no algorithm.

Today at 4pm US CT (GMT-6) @ https://studio.nosignal.zone

I keep coming back to this line from Mark Eitzel's “Costume Characters Face Danger in the Workplace”:

"I don't believe in the future, it's all going to shit
But I thought we could still put on a show”

Keep making art, okay?

I went back to a recording project from 2024 and I was appalled at my mixing technique. It got worse when I saw how I did the gain staging. This was just how I did things two short years ago.

A nice reminder about getting better with practice!

In the world of ham radio, seasoned operators can identify each other’s morse code transmissions based on subtle qualities that define the sender’s “fist”, or distinctive style of tapping their morse key (an on/off hardware switch). An operator’s fist is proof of life.

This is a post about AI.

Thursday afternoons I transition to studio practice, and today I’m getting started an hour earlier than usual thanks to a last-minute work meeting cancellation.

And this week’s #disquietjunto is about reverb… time to think sideways.

Should I stream it?

I’m on a decluttering rampage. My desk is clear save for gear and a couple of notebooks. I even migrated my keylights to clamp mounts attached to the back of the riser instead of the large stands they were on.

The top of my bookshelf might be next….
