Let me recommended you Guadeloupe, if you haven't been there already. For me as an European the benefits are real (Schengen area, means no hard immigration control at the airport, no change of local money or even mobile internet, its like home), but outside of that, there is a very high standard compared to other caribbean islands, super safe, beautiful nature in forests and beaches, no snakes(!) but no crazy wildlife overall.
Might be worth a look :)
