Are they ad-dependent, though? If they charged $10 per month for Gmail, that would replace it all. Granted, not everyone would pay. But IMHO it's just that advertising is how they've currently chosen ...
If every Gmail user paid $10 for their Gmail account, it would still just be a tiny insignificant drop in the bucket for Google and wouldn't change their overall culture and incentives in any way whatsoever.
