From a user perspective, what actually keeps our identity secure? I've recently been given a lot of information which conflicts with my previous understanding on how secure signers are and that's why I should just use Google login. But I don't want to do that at all and am just not going to be trying out new Nostr apps at all until I better understand this part.

The main point of Nostr identity is not that it would be more or less secure (there can be an argument made that because you can't change keys, identity theft is total, you have to start over).
