Day 18 at the ECB.

First day where my umbrella had to protect me from water instead of sunlight.
We asked bankers and passersby’s a simple question:
How does money get created?
And to our surprise no one really knew.
The bankers said it’s a very complex process and I had to remind them that they should explain it to me like I’m five years old.
In the evening, Stefano and Maxim, both trainees and therefore still somewhat curious and questioning, did their best to explain the complex intricacies of the fiat system. Talking to us, as they said, was intellectually more stimulating than talking to their colleagues.
2 layers, central bank money and commercial bank money, reserves that have to be held with the central bank, government bonds etc. pp.
