Trump keeps talking as if US energy production makes the Strait of Hormuz irrelevant. It doesn't.
America may produce a huge amount of oil and gas, but oil is priced in a global market. If Hormuz is disrupted, supply tightens, prices rise, and US households still feel it at the pump. Being a net exporter is not the same as being insulated.
There's also the refinery problem. Much of the US system is built around heavier crude, while shale output is often lighter. So the "just use our own oil" line skips over how the infrastructure actually works.
Does calling this "energy independence" hide how exposed ordinary people still are?
