My whole life they told me the US was on the rise, only getting stronger & more powerful, but it sure seems like the beginnings of a collapse started well before I was born.

Empires don't usually fall in one go. They rot.

The supports on this one have mostly rotted through, but we've got some dedicated individuals working on knocking out any remaining support beams right now.
