yeah, my understanding is that the resources needed to train models (both the data and hardware) are too massive for individuals to hope to undertake on their own. I kind of assumed that China putting out open source weights in past (since the big "deepseek moment a year ago), was some sort of economic attack, which benefitted you and me, and hoped such dynamics would continue.
I don't know if I'm wrong about my assumptions or inferences, so figured I'd blurt them out and get corrected if I'm mistaken. If I'm right, then this doesn't bode that well, but at least the models out there this far are pretty decent I suppose?

Hopefully open source AI is more important to the Chinese government than just an economic attack that they are willing to stop given some economic incentives by the US. Like maybe it helps all the Chinese labs keep a higher AI capability baseline with the shared research and model weights. I suppos...
