My TV started constantly losing its WiFi connection and after trying all the standard stuff I finally dug into the system logs on the WiFi router to determine that the router was sending control commands to tell the TV to upgrade from the 2GHz to the 5GHz band and when the TV didn't respond appropriately, the router would deauth it for some stupid reason.

I can only assume something changed in the TV firmware because I haven't upgraded my WiFi firmware in 6 months.

So I found the config to disable "smart connection upgrades" and now everything is stable. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be for a normie without deep networking knowledge to run into this bullshit.

Amen. I'm getting sick of "smart" TVs.

Yeah, Usually when you don’t get upset about hackers fucking with you they get bored and go somewhere else. Don’t let the bastards wear you down.

Had a similar situation when I got my PS5. Had to go in and TELL it to always use 5GHz. The "auto connection" would flip flop back and forth for no reason.

"time to buy a new TV I guess" 👀

"Commercial displays" are my new standard. Love it. Fuck 'smart' TVs.

Every now and again my TV will just stop working and of course force me to upgrade firmware. My previous Samsung Decided to do some shit and I had to flash an SD card and Afro engineer a situation to get it rebooted. Life

You own a TV?!
nostrich · 35w
That is the most annoying things in devices. There are some automated stuff that does things you don't want.
OgFOMK ArTS · 35w
That's helpful. Always disable the automatic whatever.

Its called “planned obsolescence “
Sat Chats · 35w
Don't today's TVs try to collect a lot of info on you? How do you harden it for privacy?
ariondir · 35w
I think about this a lot when I have to do some crazy deep dive troubleshooting to get something to work

Holy shit I would never let my tv connect to the internet
M0053 · 35w
Yeah, it must be really, really, really hard to be a normie.

This is what Black Friday and Prime Day are for.

Stop using wireless signals. Connect everything to the ethernet directly.
nostrich · 35w
I don't let my spybox (television) talk to the Internet, at all.
JesterHodl · 35w
"Smart connection upgrades" doesn't sound like OpenWrt. Are you running vendor firmware?
florian · 35w
Ethernet cable fixes this

Wait til you find out what other "control commands" your wireless router is sending. Maybe consider hardwire connections? Try turning off your wireless routers at night when you are asleep. Your mileage may vary. 💜🧡

We just wait (sometimes for 6+ months) until the TV manufacturer releases a firmware solution and our TV auto updates itself with It.
