So apparently the Federation is not a great fan of multiple layers of proxy on top of tunneling... Resulting in my homelab Synapse instance constantly getting defederated, connection silently failing,...
Let me just say... Synapse documentation is bad. Like really, really bad.
However, despite that I managed to scale my instance with generic and media workers. Now it just zooms!
(I also wiped it and started fresh to remove "matrix" from my homeserver name, because it bothered me...)
