A lot of people absorbed the idea that “I was wrong” = “I’m a horrible person”.

Unfortunately a lot of religion leans into this. In religion “I was wrong” = “I sinned” = “I’m going to be punished by god” ...which is of course terrifying!

This is one reason I think the Greek behind “sin” matters. The Greek hamartia carries the sense of missing the mark—to err, to fall short. The language is one of aim: you intended to hit the mark, and you missed. You missed the mark. Okay. See it clearly. Course correct. Do better next time....
