Typical male heirarchy is extremely fluid. Who is in charge right now depends on who is best at the challenge at hand.

2 scenarios break that behavior. An insecure ass shows up and needs to feed their ego. The men in the group don't know each other well enough for domain specific heirarchy to have known rankings.

Note that the design of our society weakens social bonds and breeds insecurity.

there is a strong contrast between the social hierarchies of prehistoric human communities and those of today. hierarchy plays a much bigger role than community itself. caretakers work is less valuable than positional influence. the design of our society is really fucked up.
