I hate SMB with a passion.

For backups I think I'd prefer Borg, especially when backing up to a remote target that may not be entirely under my control. I used to do rsync with hard links for a long while but switched to all-Borg a couple of years ago.

There are also nice graphical frontends which are great when cherry-licking few from backup sets. Like Pika for Gnome for example.
