@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... People don't understand how electricity works. Or their microwave. Or their car's engine....
And you're honestly perfectly okay with that? Really truly?
I mean, I've always said that if you use a piece of equipment every day, you should have a passing understanding of how it functions.
I'm not saying everyone who uses a computer or drives a car should be able to build one from scratch. Or that you should have intimate knowledge of logic gates and how current flows through the resisters and transistors on your motherboard. But shouldn't you at least be able to waffle for 2-3 minutes on the very basics of what happens when you turn the key in your ignition, in order to make the engine turn over? Or understand that there's a compressor in your fridge and -- on the most basic level -- what a compressor is and how it functions? Or be able check check oil and water? Change a tyre? Know where the spark plug goes (in a petrol-powered engine)?
You're absolutely perfectly 100% fine with people not knowing -- or even wanting to know -- these things?
I don't drive, so I don't understand the very finer points of all those questions, but I learnt the theory in school, and retained it.
I learnt a great deal about how electricity works from being on our neighbourhood service delivery WhatsApp group, and reading the reports from the technicians about what was wrong when our power went down, about transformers and feeders and what Eskom is responsible for and what my municipality is responsible for, and I saw the distribution diagram. Then I learnt even more when I was shopping around for inverters and batteries during load shedding. And even more when I wanted to attach solar to it.
I can't take my fridge apart and put it back together again, but I know where the compressor is and what the problem could be if there's water pouring out of it.
I know a fair bit about how water flows into and out of my geyser (again, I learnt a lot more when I had a solar pump put in).
Before I self-published my first book, I made sure I understood intimately what an "epub" is and how to make one.
If you rely on a piece of technology, it behooves you to learn as much as you reasonably and practically can about that piece of technology. Otherwise you're just... powerless. Completely at the mercy of someone else.
But yeah, I'm a geek. A geek and a nerd. I'm not being sarcastic; what that means is that I'm the sort of person who loves to learn things. Other people aren't, and don't, and are happy to go through live in ignorance. I just... think that's a real waste, is all. :)
